Market Capitalization Aspect in IDX: Bakrie Case

I've been investing in stock market since 2008. In this posting, I just want to share some simple things in what I've been facing. As you know, Indonesia Stock Exchange had a very nice bullish trend back in 2005 to 2007, then in late 2008, IDX along with other global stock market in the world had lost half its value.

In stock investment, the main player company with their big stock volume being traded in the stock market is called the big capitalization stock. In IDX in the last few years, the big one is TLKM and BUMI just become the biggest in 2008. The big caps stock price movement will affect the overall index, thats why big caps stock is more dynamic than any other stock in the market.

For example TLKM, in the early 2008 hit its lowest price because of the Content Provider problem and also for the tough competition in the market. But late in 2008, TLKM managed to get their position back as biggest caps in the IDX.

BUMI is another story, BUMI managed to get their highest price in 2008 with almost 500% rise in their 2005 price. But in the end of 2008, BUMI hit its initial price just like in 2005.



The market capitalization is one the important part any investor should consider in stock investment. If you want to get your investment worthed, you should consider to buy the big caps stock in its low price and hold them, it may not need long years to get your profit.

Bukan Bakrie namanya kalau tidak bisa membuat kejutan

Bakrie & Brothers adalah sebuah perusahaan keluarga yang dimulai dari generasi pertama H. Ahmad Bakrie di era awal kemerdekaan Indonesia, pengusaha lain yang memulai pada waktu yang sama diantaranya adalah Haji Kalla di Makassar. Bakrie memulai usahanya di bidang perdagangan komoditas dan saat ini Bakrie memiliki usaha di hampir seluruh sektor industri di Indonesia, seperti pipa baja, konstruksi, perumahan, telekomunikasi, perkebunan dan media.

Logo Bakrie & Brothers menggambarkan cita-cita pendirinya yang selalu memiliki cita-cita setinggi langit, digambarkan dengan awan-awan biru, tetapi juga memiliki pijakan tindakan yang membumi, digambarkan dengan dua garis coklat.

Saya mulai bekerja di salah satu perusahaan grup Bakrie sejak 2006, tetapi baru mulai aktif berinvestasi di Bakrie sejak tahun ini 2008. Fakta bahwa grup Bakrie menguasai hampir 50% kapitalisasi pasar di Bursa saham Indonesia menarik minat setiap Investor di Bursa Saham, terlebih ada sebuah ungkapan yang berlaku di seluruh dunia 'Too Big To Fail', artinya dengan kapitalisasi sebesar itu, maka sustainability Bakrie sedikit banyak tidak bermasalah.

Investasi pertama dilakukan di BUMI Resources, perusahaan tambang grup Bakrie. BUMI sendiri merupakan bintang di Bursa sejak 2005/2006. Saham BUMI terus melejit setelah berhasil mengakuisisi KPC dan Arutmin (dua tambang Batubara besar di Indonesia). Transaksi yang seperti cacing menelan Gajah ini langsung mendongkrak saham BUMI, ditambah dengan meroketnya harga Batubara sampai ratusan persen ikut mengerek saham BUMI. Pada September yang lalu, BUMI berhasil menggeser posisi Telkom sebagai pemegang kapitalisasi pasar terbesar di BEI. Akhir tahun ini, BUMI harga sahamnya merosot sangat tajam karena Gelembung harga komoditas telah pecah dan permasalahan kepemilikan saham di BUMI oleh Bakrie.

Investasi kedua dilakukan di perusahaan telekomunikasi grup Bakrie, BTEL. BTEL mulai melantai di bursa sejak 2006 dengan kondisi keuangan perusahaan yang masih merugi. Namun, di akhir 2006 BTEL mampu membukukan keuntungan bersih pertamanya dan hal ini membuat sahamnya di Bursa ikut terdongkrak. Tetapi, pada akhir tahun ini saham BTEL merosot di harga 50an rupiah, jauh lebih rendah dari harga IPO di 100an rupiah. Penyebab utama penurunan adalah krisis global dan sentimen negatif di pemilik BTEL yaitu Bakrie & Brothers.

Investasi terakhir di grup Bakrie dilakukan induk usaha Bakrie, yaitu Bakrie & Brothers, BNBR. Pada awal tahun 2008 BNBR menggebrak pasar saham dengan merilis berita akan melakukan Right Issue besar-besaran. Publik bertanya-tanya untuk apa RI sebesar itu?, ternyata jawabannya adalah untuk mengakuisisi saham mayoritas di semua perusahaan grup Bakrie seperti BUMI, Bakrieland dan Bakrie Sumatera Plantation. Aksi besar-besaran ini akan menjadikan BNBR sebuah perusahaan investasi besar yang akan bersaing dengan BMTR dan ASII. Bahkan, tidak mungkin akan menjadi perusahaan Investasi besar berskala dunia seperti Berkshire (he he he, hiperbolistis ya :D).

Pada akhirnya, moral of the story adalah Investasi saya saat ini terhenti di BNBR. Hutang BNBR yang besar kepada JPMorgan dan Odickson, gagal bayar ke beberapa sekuritas dan terakhir strategic partnership dengan Northstar di BUMI adalah sebagian dari kejutan-kejutan yang saya terima dari BNBR di tahun 2008.

BUMI and Indonesia Stock Market

PT BUMI Resources Tbk, or just for short we called it just BUMI. Lets turn the time to early 2003, back then BUMI stock traded in Rp. 90,- per share. Although BUMI is one of the Coal company that also gain some profit from the coal price rise, but as a small player in this sector, rather than KPC (Kaltim Prima Coal), the largest coal company in Asia.

Then, the shocking news came to the market. BUMI said that they'll buy KPC in the 2003, the realization of the plan finished in 2007. As the largest coal company in the Asia and the Global Warming issue in 2006-2007, then the BUMI stock price in 2007 reached Rp. 8000,-.

This early 2008, I bought some BUMI, at the price Rp. 5000,- with Target Price Rp. 6500,-. Why I came up with the 6500 rather than the highest price at 8000, because the Financial Report of Q4 2007 BUMI is not that good and thats why I came up with the number.

I get my 6500 in the end of April, but I didn't read the news paper when I decided to sell the BUMI. Currently BUMI doing some buyback to increase the share price, if I read the newspaper early in the morning I could sell it in 8000 :(.

But then, I still happy because I managed my Target Price and strategy succesfully :D.
